Below-grade spaces sit in close contact with the surrounding ground, which means moisture is a far bigger factor here than in a first-floor room. Timber is particularly vulnerable, warping or rotting if moisture gets underneath it, while some tiled installations can develop issues if the subfloor isn't properly damp-proofed first. Older basements also tend to have uneven or cracked concrete, built to a lower finishing standard than the rest of the home.

What a Basement Floor Needs to Get Right

• A damp-proofing strategy suited to the specific moisture levels in the space

• A level, properly prepared subfloor, even where the existing concrete is uneven or cracked

• A warm-enough finish underfoot, ideally paired with underfloor heating where the ceiling height allows

• A durable, low-maintenance surface, since basements are often used for higher-traffic purposes like home gyms, playrooms or home offices

• Good light reflectance in the finish chosen, helping counter the naturally lower light levels below ground

Why Resin Works Well in These Spaces

A seamless resin floor, properly installed over a correctly damp-proofed subfloor, gives basements a finish that performs as well as anywhere else in the home. Because it's fully bonded rather than laid in individual units, there's no risk of tiles lifting or timber boards warping if moisture levels fluctuate seasonally, and the low-maintenance surface suits basements being converted into functional, frequently used rooms rather than simple storage.
